چکیده

The Pairwise Variability Index (PVI), a measure of how much unit-to-unit variation there is in speech, has been used as a correlate of rhythmic impressions such as ‘syllable-timed’ and ‘stress-timed’. Grabe and Low (2002) included Estonian among a number of languages for which they calculated the durational PVI for vowels and for intervocalic intervals, but other than that Estonian rhythm has not been studied within recent approaches to rhythm calculation. The pilot experiment reported in this paper compares the use of various speech units for the characterisation of Estonian speech rhythm. It is concluded that the durational PVI of the syllable and of the foot are more appropriate for capturing the rhythmic complexity of Estonian, and might provide a subtle tool for characterising languages in general.

Rhythmic Variability and Swedish-Estonian Language Contact

Pairwise Variability Index (PVI) gives a measure of the amount of variation between adjacent speech units, making it possible to arrange languages in a continuum of relative variability. In the present study, the PVI of Estonian speakers living in Sweden for over 60 years was compared to the PVI of Swedish and of Estonian spoken in Estonia. The results show that (1) PVI is significantly higher ...

Perceptually Informed Quantification of Speech Rhythm in Pairwise Variability Indices

Two previous experiments demonstrated that f0 and duration are interdependent in the perception of rhythmic groups in speech and sentence rhythmicality, and that the relative weighting of tonal and durational cues depends on listeners' native language. The listeners were native speakers of Swiss German, Swiss French, or Metropolitan French (i.e. from France). The experiment reported here invest...

Study of the effect of Estonian and aqueous extract of Persian walnut tree leaf (Juglans regia) on growth indicators in western white shrimp farmed (Litopenaeus vannamei)

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Estonian and aqueous extracts of Persian walnut leaves on the performance of growth indices in western white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). Materials and methods included 6 treatments of shrimp with different concentrations of 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg aqueous and Estonian extracts of Persian walnut leaves in the diet and 2 negative control t...

The Pairwise Variability Index as a Tool in Musical Rhythm Analysis

The normalized pairwise variability index (nPVI) is a measure of the average variation of a set of distances (durations) that are obtained from successive ordered pairs of events. It was originally conceived for measuring the rhythmic differences between languages on the basis of vowel length. More recently, it has also been employed successfully to compare large-scale rhythm in speech and musi...

Validating Acoustic Measures of Speech Rhythm for Second Language Acquisition

This paper reports research investigating the validity of using Pairwise Variability Indexes in research into the second language acquisition of speech rhythm. Findings determined that 1) expert native-speakers rate non-native speaker rhythm based on a common factor, and 2) part of that common factor can be accounted for by the use of vocalic pairwise variability. It was concluded that the PVI ...
